misc bisque

1. The other day I asked Pete, "Who would you rather be president, Mitt Romney or Sandra Lee?"

He couldn't answer! They are both too horrible!!

2. I quit drinking coffee. Again. It's not fun I tell you. So, I quit coffee for awhile last year, because I was drinking too much of it after I had that stress fracture in my foot. Then I started drinking it again when we got new free coffee machines at work. Then quit in December, then started again. Last Wednesday I quit again. This is harder than the other times. But hey, I really needed to quit. I couldn't stop! I would keep getting more and more coffee throughout the day until I was sick to my stomach and had a headache and my fingers would be wiggly too. I've had to hide my special coffee cup from myself because I would stare longingly at it on my desk. Now that I'm not always travelling to the kitchen to fill up, I can see how much time I spent getting refills. (My office is far from the kitchen.) So, good for your health AND a time-saver? How am I using this saved time? By blogging! Ha.

So, I've been drinking green tea and herbal teas, but I'm getting sick of my favorite flavors. And tea just doesn't have the meatiness of coffee. Or the rich aroma. Or a satisfying feeling with each sip. etc etc.

3. Here's a tip to chefs: don't be all like, I'm gonna put cubes of radish in here so people will want to eat it because they think it's potato. Not nice!!

4. DVD obsessions:
-- Deadwood Season 3 OMG OMG! so good and so good for you!
-- Weeds Season 2 Yay! We watched it all in 3 days. Nancy, nancy, nancy!
-- Seinfeld Season 7 the crew starts to show their darker side.
-- Note: if you are ahead (that is, up to date) with Deadwood or Weeds, please don't give anything away to me.

5. Pete and the Simpsons

I love Pete, he is such a funny fellow. As you know sometimes he becomes passionate about a topic, such as politics, India, environmental issues, and of course, the Simpsons!

Since I have known Pete, he has not watched the Simpsons. Well, some of you have known Pete longer than I have. (I met him in 2000.) And those of you who knew him back in the day recall his Simpsons fanaticism. Yesterday Willis was describing this to me. He is very familiar with Pete's Simpsons rituals because he and FW stayed at the Dump (home of Dup and Pete) for awhile.

Highlights of Willis's report (note: paraphrased by the editor):

- Pete demanded total silence throughout the Dump from 6:30 - 7 when the Simpsons was on.
- This meant that all residents and guests must go to the bathroom and gather up any snacks or supplies before 6:30. No moving around or extra sounds, much less talking.
- Once the show was over, Pete would go into his bedroom and shut the door. This caused mixed feelings in Willis, because he felt that he couldn't compete with the Simpsons. In other words, if the choices were 1) watching the Simpsons, 2) talking to Willis, FW and Dup, or 3) sitting alone in his room, Pete's first choice was Simpsons and next choice was alone in room! [Editor's note: Pete must have just been being weird back then, because I know for a fact he loves talking with Willis, FW and Dup in any combination.]
- Pete had cardboard cutouts of the characters' heads up on the wall in the Dump living room.

I checked these facts with Pete last night and he doesn't remember such extremism, but also didn't argue any of these items. He added:

- Dup took down the Simpsons cut-outs once when he was on vacation.

- He recalls the very day he quit the Simpsons. It was an episode about Simpsons spinoffs. He turned off the TV in the middle of the episode and went into his room and closed the door. He said that Willis was there for that moment.

- He has not watched any new episodes since that time. And he's not going to see the movie.

My observation:
Pete gets agitated when he talks about the Simpsons, because he is still mad that they turned to crap in his opinion.

6. There's only one way to finish this post after that nugget. And that's with a photo of our dog!

Great combo post, Blade.

But the part about staring longingly at your favorite coffee cup just killed me. Maybe you should join Coffeeholics Anonymous.

And tell Pete he just needs to lower his standards so he can enjoy his favorite pasttime once again!

It was the spin-off episode and also the one with the Budweiser frogs which I saw in repeats the other nights. "BUDWEISER FROGS!" exclaimed Pete in disbelief. For me it is the episode where George Bush Sr moves in. That one is just unbelievably bad.

I don't remember taking down the Simpsons masks but it sounds like me.

1. Sandra Lee looks scary.

2. Have you tried green tea with double teabags? I'm a green tea-aholic (several many cups every day) and when I first started drinking it a lot (to replace coffee) I would make it SUPER strong. Here's what you have to do: you have to get good green tea, not celestial seasonings or that crap, you've got to go for the Tazo or the Yogi brand teas, they make good green tea in lots of flavors. The by far best brand for green tea is the Mighty Leaf brand, but it's really hard to find. So you take your good green tea, and THEN you've got to double-up on the tea bags and leave them in there for a long time. The taste might be a little much at first, but I found that the caffeine kick from such a concoction is Soooooo satisfying. It doesn't make you all hyper and jiggly like coffee will make you, it makes you feel smooth and alert and sort of, dare I say it, peaceful. Try it! (I don't really drink it like that anymore, fyi, now I only need one bag, but I do drink a million cups a day, including, nearly daily, a Starbucks iced green tea, which is also quite kick-ass).

3. Not nice!

4. Deadwood blows my mind. I want to run away with Ian McShane. It's okay, Willis knows, I think he's okay with it.

5. I have never heard these Simpson stories, but when I was just out of college I lived in a house with a bunch of dudes, and one of them had like EVERY episode of the Simpsons on VHS, like 100 VHS tapes full of Simpsons, and I think I spent a good part of that year watching them all. In order. (I was stoned a lot during that period of my life.) But now, I also have trouble watching them. The joy has diminished.
