What's the deal with Larry King?

Where did he come from? What is his background - is he a journalist? Entertainer? How did he get to have his own show on CNN?

I hate it when he's on. It's awful when we turn on CNN and there's an interesting topic being discussed (most recently, UFO's making their way towards Crawford, TX) but then it turns out it's on Larry King. At our house that means we change the channel. (Because I am a tyrant when he appears. I don't know what happens in this scenario when I'm not home. Maybe Pete leaves him on.)
